A. Increase Methods of Holding School Districts Accountable
In her 1993 book entitled Last Chance High School: How Girls and Boys Drop In and Out of Alternative School, Dr. Dierdre Kelly examined Bay Area schools and noted the use of safety valve programs, in which alternative school programs serve as a tool to rid mainstream schools of “problem” students, without holding school administrators accountable for the consequences. Over twenty years later, there is still a need to prevent mainstream schools from using alternative schools in this manner, without giving thought to the consequences for the students they refer out. Another role for the community is contributing to the physical maintenance of the buildings.
In Georgia, Richmond County Alternative Education Center is taking an untraditional approach to alternative education by requiring that their students participate in a two-hour after school Boys and Girls Club program. Students will have an opportunity to receive college and career counseling. This program recognizes that punishing students for their behavior is not enough – the root cause of disciplinary problems are often overlooked by programs that focus only on punishment.
Black students may internalize negative experience they have in school. For instance, if they see few students like them in advanced placement classes, or quickly “pushed out” of the classroom. Mentorship offers an opportunity to reverse this negative process. Young people who are surrounded by caring family members are less prone to delinquency, given the support system they have in place. Alternative school students can benefit greatly from such a support system, specifically one built by college students, graduate and professional students, to step in and fill the void left by classroom instruction. Mentorship allows students to see other young people of color who are successful and
