I have had the opportunity to attend clinics in Martinsville and Danville as a part of Service Learning course. It was fascinating experience to cater dental care to the communities in Roanoke and Danville. My role during this service learning experience was to provide dental care to patients under the supervision of attending faculty. Majority of the faculty are receptive to the fact that I am an IDP student and had some experience of working as a dentist in India. Dr. Hartigan and Dr. Gatewood Shared interesting thoughts about their experience in communities around the clinics. Furthermore, they shared how they developed their professional career after dental school and how they ended up working in community clinic.
There are two sites in this part of Virginia with similar goals: Community Dental Clinic (Piedmont Virginia Dental Health Foundation, Martinsville) and Danville Dental Center (PATHS Community Dental Center). Furthermore, majority of rotation keep students busy by maintaining good show up rate. Interestingly, attending faculty at Martinsville clinic has a busy schedule for himself, and he moves his patients to students’ chair if there were many cancellations. This way students stay busy under his supervision. A community clinic in Lynchburg ask patients to pay in advance for their next visit which leads to very impressive show up rate. Majority of sites provide services within the scope of resources such as restorative dental care and extraction.
