There are various principles of training that athletes take into account when maximising or improving their training/ performance. This 18-year-old athlete who is training for a 14km running event uses the principles of training to prepare mentally and physically for this event. All six principles of training have been integrated in this program however, only three are significantly used; Progressive Overload, Training Thresholds and Variety.
Progressive Overload is the principle that enhances performance by providing a constant challenge to the body. As the body becomes accustomed to a given work load, it is important to increase the load in order to maintain improvement. It is also essential for the athlete in order for them to become fitter, stronger and to improve during training. Progressive Overload is done in this program where the athlete increases the intensity and frequency, although there are no specific reps recorded, a judgment is made based on the program as the athlete trains for a longer period of time, decreases the rest time between the days as the weeks go …show more content…
The athlete uses the variety principle to make changes to the training method, between fartlek (football), circuit, continuous (cycle) and aerobic interval (swim). Swimming is beneficial for runners as it allows athletes to increase endurance and oxygen capacity as well as being an anti-inflammatory therapy for the legs when performed in cool temperatures. Cycling increases, the athlete’s cardiovascular fitness that has less recovery time as a result of the decreased impact. Circuit Training is most effective for this athlete as it improves cardio fitness, enhances strength, stamina and mobility and helps maintain a better running posture/
