Nursing excellence involves nurse managers, educators, and leaders who are engaged in helping direct care nurses deliver compassionate, high-quality, and patient-centered care (McSherry, Pearce, Grimwood, & McSherry, 2012). Hospitals that are recognized and known for nursing excellence are associated with a better patient experience (Stimpfel, Sloane, McHugh, & Aiken, 2016). For this discussion, I will chose two health care organizations and review each in regards to their purpose and impact on, role in, and support of nursing. The two organizations I will examine are The Joint Commission (TJC) and the National League for Nursing (NLN). Founded in 1951, the purpose of TJC is to continually improve health care (The Joint Commission, 2016). …show more content…
They are recognized as a symbol of quality that demonstrates an organization’s level of commitment when it comes to meeting a particular set of performance standards. Their vision is that people will consistently receive health care that is of the highest quality and best value that is also the safest. They have a heavy impact on nursing practices in the workplace as they are a resource for standards of care, National Patient Safety Goals, and education. Accreditation standards include requiring organizations to promote professional behavior, establish codes of conduct, and ensure adequate staffing. Their role in nursing education is that they provide the most up-to-date, accurate information in regards to topics like Universal Protocol and “Do Not Use” List of Abbreviations, amongst others. They also have a Topic Library on their website that furnishes links to further education on items such as Infection Control and Disease Specific Care. They are supportive of nursing research and have a variety of webinars to view and study articles to read that are available through their Topic Library. They provide for Nursing Excellence in the areas of being a resource for health care systems, providing performance standards and guidance, and offering accreditation and certification …show more content…
