Over 15 years ago, Robert Nash (2011) developed a new academic writing style called Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN). For the first time in academics the unacceptable use of the ‘subjective I [me]’was acceptable in scholarly writing. Before SPN only the ‘objective they [we]’ was appropriate for research because scholars believed that only experts could support an agreeable or disagreeable topic. Nash (2011) wanted SPN to become, “a respectable research genre in higher education, particularly in the professional schools” (p. 4), so he wrote his first book, Liberating Scholarly Writing: The Power of Personal Narrative (2004).…

Erica Goldson gave her high school valedictorian speech on that very same topic in which she condemned the public education system. I have taught multiple sections of Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, and Information Security courses. In these discipline areas, I have adopted a multi-modal delivery of course materials, in an attempt to engage a variety of learning styles that are influenced by personal and cultural backgrounds. In my courses, I have balanced individual and group projects to allow the students to work in teams and on individual projects. I have worked to deliver a variety of assessment materials to allow different strengths of the student be challenged. This has led to an observed greater grasp of the basic course competencies with this interaction and a greater attendance rate from my students when they are engaged through this multi-level approach.…

Throughout the year, as a class we have been given many different challenges in either the form of an essay, speech, or group presentation. The final assignment given to us was a group project presentation. From growing up in an age filled with technology, I have come to love projects that revolve around making some form of a PowerPoint presentation. This PowerPoint though, was both difficult and interesting for the reasons of being assigned group members not of my own choosing, learning to listen to others ideas which can help me to learn something new, and using former knowledge while working together to create a clean, in depth, and well prepared presentation. With working in groups of students whom I have known since I was young but…

Life of an English Teacher As a student, many people think all English teachers are the same or maybe even use the same methods. But while interviewing Mrs. Taylor, one of my English teachers from High School, I was intrigued by the different methods, activities, and even the classroom environment. During this day I took the time to spend a day on the teacher’s side of the desk and see what I can learn from someone in the profession, and might I say I was exceptionally impressed. To start off the first period of Freshman English class, Mrs. Taylor has an inspirational quote up for students to write about. They simply take out a piece of paper known as “Warm Ups”.…
