Evaluating Children's Language Development

o As an ECE birth-5 major, I want to work as a preschool or kindergarten teacher. The ages of these children can range of 3-5 years of age. During this time, children are on Jean Piaget’s pre-operation stage. At this stage, the children a beginning to play symbolically as well as parallel to other children. At this age, the children are also very egocentric. This means that they only believe in their taught and can’t take on more than one concept at a time.
 What developmental themes do you think you will be tracking in your students in the future? o I will be tracking a few things. I feel one of the most important developmental themes will be the children’s language development. Are they communicating with me as a teacher as well as other children? Are they using their words rather than yelling or hitting? Another developmental area to track would be the children’s social development. Their engagement in play as well as activities throughout the classroom. Lastly, I would track their physical development. Are they developing the appropriate fine and gross motor skills that begin to emerge at this age? Some of these skills include but not limited to, their writing grasp, balance, coordination, and/or using a scissors.

Sometimes young students don’t get a chance to share their feelings with their parents. Sometimes their parents just don’t want to hear as they may think they are complaining. A young 3-5 year old needs a friend, I want to be that friend, supporter and listener for them. As I gain that relationship with the child, I can help them in their language development, support their social development with others. As a teacher, I just want to be that adult role model for them. I could potentially be a child’s first teacher and I want all my children to have a positive learning
