We used primary research in regards to determining and finding out the causes that lead to the lack of communication that was applied during the consultation phase of implementing a new 8 week delivery format. For research purposes we decided to deviate from our original proposed primary research methods that were to use observation and interview to gather the data. Instead we decided to use action research and in particular, appreciative inquiry, focus group and grounded research. The reason being is that we thought these methods would be better suited to the problem the organization is facing, its more emergent. That is the lack of communicating, while implementation of a major change within the organization. We also thought we could gain …show more content…
This involved the researcher conducting 5 focus groups of 5 students per sitting this took about 10-15 minutes to complete. Although the time limit was short, the reason being is that we wanted to keep it simple with a few closed questions and a few open questions. We also thought that this was ample time to gain an understanding of the awareness the participants had of the communication around the deliverance of the new 8 week model. We initially opted for groups of 8-10, but due to some time constraints it was harder to initiate focus groups larger than 8 participants at a time. Each focus group consisted of Part-time, full-time, national and international student groups and mixed groups this took place over two weeks at the MIT campus, Manukau from 12-September 2016 to 23 September …show more content…
The data collected from the survey we put into graphs to show the range of the information so that better understanding of the findings, conclusion could be easily interpreted. For the observation that was carried out manual note taking was the method used with only recording the relevant information. The information gathered from the appreciative inquiry was also by a way of note taking this seemed the best method. Because the questions asked weren’t premeditated and we thought of on the spot. So taking down the notes from that research method was appropriate. The data gathered from the interview was also by the way of note taking we thought throughout our research that this would be the idealistic way of recording our data as we are able to only take down relevant and useful notes. We have a record of the email and letter used in our research and have analysed this and noted down the relevant information. Our estimates were based on the qualitative data collection, we gathered from the survey questions. We were able to conduct this survey on 35 participants. These participants included 7 Fulltime students, 7 Part-time students, 7 Domestic students, 7 International students and 7 mixed group of students. We used these categorical groups of participants that represented the student population of MIT to draw imperative and useful
