There is no doubt that the conductors mentioned in the video are all great conductors. Since this article is going to discuss the leadership effectiveness of the conductors, it is essential to also review what technique is required to be a conductor. The conductor is the director of an ensemble, responsible for all aspects of performance (Latham, 2011a). Latham summarized that clarity of beat and of spoken instruction, and great knowledge of the score are the necessary elements of being a conductor (Latham, 2011b), which are the requirements in terms of profession. To lead successfully and be truly effective, the conductors need to combine a set of sophisticated abilities and behaviors, and act as a mentor, coordinator, public speaker, producer, director, expert, colleague and dictator (Hunt, Stelluto, & Hooijberg, 2004, p. 147-149). Moreover, as Hunt, Stelluto, and Hooijberg (2004) assumed, orchestra musicians have already received good music education and they also have a great understanding of the music as the conductors do, so the musicians might appreciate more about the interpretive insight and emotional content than mere technical expertise from the conductors.
