Evacuation Day Research Paper

It was on November 25, 1783 when General George Washington victoriously led the Army north of the city, south down Manhattan through the town, across Bowling Green to The Battery at the foot of Broadway, due to the British finally leaving NYC (History, American). Bowling Green is a small public park in South Ferry, Manhattan at the end of Broadway, alongside the site of the original dutch fort of New Amsterdam. The oldest park in the city, it is named “ Bowling Green” due to the fact that the Dutch would actually play bowling, hence the name (Bowling Green). On November 25 of 1783, America and the British departed, for good. On this day the British departed from Manhattan after the end of the American Revolution.
On November 25 of 1783, in south of NYC the British left. NY was the last colony the British stayed in, them leaving was a huge deal. After the American Revolution came to a close in April 19, 1783(Oswego). The British took their troops back to Great Britain, but not all of them. Evacuation Day occurred because of the American Revolution being won and it marked the start of a new nation. According to James Riker in his book on Evacuation Day “...the British armies withdrew from our war-scarred city, with the honors of defeat thick upon them, but leaving our patriotic fathers happy in the enjoyment of their independence, so gloriously won in a seven years' conflict”. The British leaving meant so much to those in NYC, to them it was the true ending to the war. Evacuation day is also very important because of General George Washington going into the town and showing that all of the colonies cared about the fact that they were finally free as well which meant they can all start to grow the nation to something big, to something that will mean a lot to many people, and they have
