Before the civil war in America, Black were treated as slave and segregation for their color of their skin. Although this is still racism it also defines how the melting pot is a myth. It is a myth because America did not use coerce or any forceable methods on the black instead there were treated different but still allowed to keep their self imagine alive(“New York”). This is different from Jake in Eva Kolb’s story because It has shows that America is a country of free choice; and nobody will ever coerce you do anything against your will, beside paying taxes.
