Richard LaGravenese’s film ‘Freedom Writers’ (2007) depicts the lives of young teenagers and a teacher with a unique teaching method. Based on a true past event, teacher Erin Gruwell started her first year of teaching at Woodrow Wilson High School. Even though she was informed of the integration program, she was well unprepared for the characteristics of the children and her new learning environment within her classroom, 203. Erin went to great lengths to establish change throughout the film, showing us an individual can construct a change in various areas such as; her students, the school, individuals, herself and the future. Eva a “third generation gang member,” whose life was full of hardship and violence. “I am my father's daughter….. I will protect my own no matter what.” Eva was close to her father as a child until her father was locked up for retaliation and “because he was respected by his people,” she was beaten so she wouldn’t break and that is when she became a part of the gang life. she lived the life where “you could get blasted anytime you walked out your door,” she wasn’t afraid to, “protect her own.” Eva met Erin and instantly hated her because she was white and she dislikes the whites because she believes they can do anything they want just because they can. She began to get closer with Eva and believe in what she is trying to do and seeing that she is trying to help her. When she is given the novel, “The Diary of Anne Frank,” it affected her a lot as she believes Anne Frank understands her situation and that she was like her but she died. earlier on in the film e=Eva was a part of a situation where there was a shooting. She saw one of her people, Paco shoot and when she was questioned by police she lied and said it was someone else. Later on, she is shown in court as she was a witness and they asked her a final time and this was her shining moment. she confessed that it was indeed Paco who commuted the crime and she didn’t listen to her father who told her to protect her people but she listened to the right thing and learns from Erin. Erin taught her to do the right thing and not listen to others and that is what Eva did in the current scene and it made a huge impact on Eva’s life thanks to Erin help to steer her in that
