Mercy killing is a highly debated topic in today’s society. Mercy killing, otherwise known as euthanasia, is essentially the idea of ending someone’s life in order to relieve pain or sufferings. The reason for some people are not for mercy killing is because it can go against morals or beliefs but other see it as a peaceful way to end a life. Even though euthanasia can be dated all the way back to Roman times, it is still being talked about today. In Of MIce and Men by John Steinbeck, mercy killing is a major point of the book. In the book, there are two main characters which are Lennie, a big, mentally disabled man, and George, who is in charge of watching over Lennie. The story is about George and Lennie as they go off to work on the …show more content…
For example, before George and Lennie came to the ranch, Lennie got in trouble with another woman as George explains “.... gets Lennie all mixed up, and he holds on ‘cause that’s the only thing he can think to do.... By that time Lennie’s so scared all he can think to do is to hold on” (Steinbeck 41). Lennie gets in trouble even when he doesn't mean to. So, even before they arrived to the farm it is clear that Lennie gets himself into trouble. If George didn't kill Lennie, Lennie would've just gotten himself into more trouble and the cycle would just continue. In addition, while George and Lennie were at the farm, George allowed Lennie to play with the puppies. Since Lennie has no sense of how to be careful with objects, Lennie hurts the puppy as Lennie states “Why do you got to get killed? You ain’t so little as mice. I didn’t bounce you hard” (Steinbeck 85). Lennie clearly has no or very little self control when it comes to animals or people. Once Lennie was killed, he could forever stop hurting people and animals. Even though Lennie didn't mean to hurt the animals, he still hurt them and he causes trouble everywhere he
