Euthanasia if practiced properly has the potential to relieve unbearable pain and suffering from terminally ill people. A number of illnesses can have debilitating and torturous impacts on people. These symptoms can also impose severe mental suffering on the victim and their families. In some cases simple body functions such as movement and breathing can deliver unbearable pain. Some diseases such as certain brain tumours are inoperable. Victims of these tumours may experience seizures, vomiting and immobility. People in these circumstances should be allowed to judge whether life is worth living. The amount of funds able to be committed to health is limited. In the west we have seen a growing trend of maintaining the terminally ill and damaged for long periods of time on life support because of developments in technology. Some patients can be maintained in on life support for decades whilst awaiting an undignified death. This adds little to the quality of life of the terminally ill and their families and arguably diverts scarce health funds away from those who seek to benefit both society and the individual the most. Should we as a nation be funding the National Disability Insurance Scheme or maintaining terminally damaged patients on life support in a vegetative state for years?
