Rodriguez attributes much of his success in life to this event of learning English, which is why he is against bilingual education. “The Pros of Bilingual Education” by Stephen Krashen challenges Rodriguez’s stance by stating the positive impact that bilingual education has on students, and how bilingual education gives students an educational advantage compared to those without it.…

While Espada speaks English as his first language and Spanish as his second, Rodriguez spoke Spanish first, and later learned English. Rodriguez’s take on bilingualism in our society is closely related to how he grew up. Learning English was something he did out of necessity, in order to more easily adapt to American culture. Rodriguez argues that people shouldn’t be coddled when it comes to language: if they need to learn a language, do it. He provides an example of this in his essay, when he reminisces about his elementary school days.…

In early 1846, tensions between Mexico and the United States were high due to the United States annexation of Texas. These tensions reached a critical stage after "a skirmish broke out between Mexican and U.S. troops, both nations declared war" (King 65). The war between Mexico and the United States raged on for two years until it finally "ended in 1848 when the Mexican army surrendered at Chapultepec Castle and the U.S. army occupied Mexico City" (King 66). Due to its loss of the war, Mexico was forced to sign the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which turned over half of Mexico’s current territory to the United States in exchange for “15 million dollars” (King 66). This territory, created by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, became a complex area…

Deresiewicz believes a solution for neoliberalism is to make college a “high-quality, low- or no-cost mass public higher education” (32). Deresiewicz is clearly dismissing the fact that college is still expensive over years of debating if America should make college free or not. If higher education becomes free to all, the number of spots and quality of classes would be limited. For example, those students who get scholarships for their education still have to pay the absurd amount for supplies and transportation. The government would be spending billions of dollars on this idea of free college.…

As the Seattle Times reported in December of 2010, Conrad Zdzierk, a white polish man, used “hyper realistic” mask to disguise himself as a black man as he robbed several banks in Ohio. While the mask is realistic looking, the fact that he used this mask as a way to evade the police and cause another man to be arrested in his place is a horrible reality. I was unable to find a picture of the wrongly accused man to compare to the mask, but the fact that a mask caused an innocent man to be arrested is baffling. Regardless of how closely mask’s appearance resembled the man’s, that should not have led to the man’s arrest. Just because you look similar to someone who committed a crime does not mean you can be arrested just for how you look.…

Richard Rodriguez believes that the Americanization of a bilingual child will result in their public gain. “Aria” by Richard Rodriguez is a heart-wrenching piece of writing about the full Americanization of Rodriguez resulting in his native language of Spanish being forgotten and the full submersion into the English language. Many of the events Rodriguez faced in his life are present to many other bilingual students’ today. These events that bilingual students’ are facing will strongly influence their decision on struggling to learn two languages at a young age, stalling the development of one of their languages, or being forced to choose one language or the other in a full assimilation. Rodriguez’s viewpoint is that if you want to make a full…

During my previous spring semester, I enrolled myself in a Spanish class, where online homework was assigned. Before I began my homework, there was a video on the home page that caught my particular attention. Until then, I had no idea that languages could become endangered, or for that matter, go extinct all together. As I watched the video, I learned about a language in Mexico called Ayapaneco. Its sole native speakers are two elderly men in their seventies, but a fight has since left the two in silence for decades.…
