Alas, despite the desire for some Europeans to create a United States of Europe, I do not believe this goal is feasible. European countries have unique histories and cultures that stretch back hundreds and even thousands of years. Competing cultures lead to conflict and eventually to war. Wars have occurred throughout European history, but not until the twentieth century did a war have the ability to totally reset the previous norms in Europe. The First World War infamously nicknamed “The War to end all Wars” occurred between 1914 and 1918. The First World War ravaged the continent and led to the collapse of many ideas that were thought to have been conventional wisdom. The previous Balance of Power system had failed and it was time to pick up the pieces. At this moment Europeans had …show more content…
These divergences have caused inequalities between nations in Europe; Inequalities that still exist today as a result of the different rates European countries progressed after the Second World War due to differing philosophies and objectives. Ultimately the difference in economic growth and prosperity between the United Kingdom and Romania since 1945 is why Nigel Farage does not want Romanians living next door. The inequality in Europe and the differences between each countries national institutions holds Europe back from becoming completely integrated. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker stated, “It is not acceptable that European Union countries are divided into those who give and those who take (Martin).” The feeling of being taken advantage of is why some Britons are contemplating a Brexit; while the feeling of being viewed as a pariah is why many Romanians are upset. Ultimately, the divides in Europe stem from the unique paths each nation took in the time since the Second World War in areas such as
