My European Internship At Kaiserslautern High School

European Internship Reflection Paper My European Internship at Kaiserslautern High School in Kaiserslautern, Germany was an unforgettable experience. I say this with both the most positive and highest regard someone could use to define a once in a lifetime and life-changing opportunity. I was able to grow as a future special education educator, a Western Michigan University student, and as an individual. I was pushed out of my comfort zone in many ways inside and outside the classroom, and through the Department of Defense School Environment, as well as being in Germany, which to me, was a foreign country in Europe. I can honestly say that through this internship experience, I have gained countless knowledge, the “on the job” application …show more content…
A second huge contribution and “culture shock” I was exposed to during my Special Education Internship, was the United States of America Military culture. I say culture as the military has a language, holidays, institutions, foundations, and traditions of their own. Both the United States Air Force and the United States Army have cultures, customs, expectations, rules, laws, benefits, and consequences that we as United States Citizens may never encounter or become familiar with. One memory I can think of in particular that was impacted by the Department of Defense culture was all of the paperwork, procedures, protocols, practices, and chains of command that are involved. I had no idea and did not have any background information to go off of for what I thought my European Internship with the DODEA would entail. I entered Germany and was immediately taken with both Ciera, and Lisa (the two other WMU interns) to get our paperwork filled, processed, and then receive the different necessities needed to both work, enter, and use the privileges on the base. Engaging in these customs were both time consuming, and frustrating, but at the same time I felt more safe and were also …show more content…
I was asked to lead, fine tune, and help design the Special Education Curriculums at Kaiserslautern High School, develop Common Core Assessments for the Special Education Department, and establish as well as create weekly collaboration procedures, processes, and norms. Although, I was both terrified and excited I realized how important and how much I was able to positively impact Kaiserslautern High School. I also learned so much from my mentor teacher, his experiences, and his “bag of tricks”. My mentor teacher, Mr. Grogan is the Special Education Department Head, and Kaiserslautern High Schools Special Education CSC Chair. He is one of the best and greatest mentors I could have ever asked for. He was extremely supportive, open, and right from the start involved me and pushed me to involve myself in experiences that I would have never had anywhere else, and created some of the most beneficial skills I obtained through this internship. He exposed me to things, that I had not had a ton of experience with before and also built on the concepts that I had learned as a student in Western Michigan Universities Special Education Program. Just one of the most beneficial as well as frequent and

At the beginning of the semester while at my field placement, I noticed several staff members who appeared burnt out. Since that time, I set a personal goal to aim to lift the spirits of the staff members within the agency. I decorated the bulletin boards around the office giving the staff positive messages to view throughout their day. I also secretly left positive quote cards on their desks in efforts to further build morale around the office. While visiting the offices of the staff members, I have noticed the cards displayed on filing cabinets and taped to desk.…

I got the opportunity to do my internship at Houston Methodist West Hospital. I have been working for Methodist for the past 4 years in our registration department and out of those four years, I have had the opportunity to work with 3 different management teams. Although, each of my management teams delivered different methods on how to properly register a patient under 7 min or less, our goal we have always strived for was keeping our patient satisfaction scores at a high. Our organization implemented a strategy called AIDET, (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explain, and Thank you) to make this process work effectively. In January, when I first started my internship at the Mansfield Youth Services Bureau, I was unsure of whether or not it was the type of placement I was in search of. When I first reached out to the Director of Youth Services, Pat Michalak, it was with the intention that I would be placed in a position where I could gain hands-on experience working with youth, ages 18 and under, but that was not what was available to me at the time. The bureau’s two initiatives that allow for direct involvement with youth, Big Friends and COPE, had already been filled at the beginning of the school year. However, Pat was so intrigued by my e-mail of inquiry that she did not wish to lose me as an intern.…

“Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced.” This quote is penned by Soren Kierkegaard and has become one of the most influential examples that I lead my life by. Everyone has a story, whether a person’s story comes from overcoming adversity or facing their demons, it’s their story or their accomplishment; and mine is no different. When I was younger I was faced with one of the greatest challenges life has to offer, my mother passed away from cancer at the tender age of 41. Growing up, I never knew how to live without my mom; I didn’t know what I was supposed to do anymore.…

As I walked into the small building, that in fact looked very enormous at the time, I began to anticipate every answer I would give to the person who interviewed me, so that to them, I would at least seem prepared. Although I had practiced my interviewing skills that very morning, I felt anxious and worried. Not knowing what to expect, many different scenarios ran through my mind, all of which weren't making my situation any better. Questions after questions were asked, all which seemed impossible for me to answer, and I felt as though I blew the whole thing. After the interview, many days passed by, and I had convinced myself that I did not get job.…
