It sounds like a diary entry. The author does not say much about the quality of islamic practices but does say that their chief qualities are devotion and piety. They are called “The Giver of Gifts” because they would raid nearby towns and use what they looted in a way that is told by the Koran.
Pg 496 The “goods” refer to slaves. Slaves were not thought about as people but rather an object to make money off of. The relationship between the two seems a little strained because the Portuguese did not do what they were supposed to with the slaves. Affonso did not have control over the situation because there was nothing he could do about the slaves after he had sold them. They have Portuguese names because they were in contact with the portuguese a lot.
