• From the 1880s to 1990s there was a Scramble for Africa, it was known as the imperialist period when Africa was invaded and colonized by European powers.

-Economic: Industrialized revolution lead to the need for additional labour, markets for sale and raw materials.
-Political: The European powers need to show dominance by acquiring territories.
-Social: Africans were seen as savage creatures and there was a need to Christianize them.

Europe had a military advantage as their equipment were advanced. Whilst the Africans had outdated equipment that could not compete with those of the Europeans. Also African states were experiencing conflicts which did not allow the Africans to give full attention to the European invasion. Whilst, Europe had nothing distracting it as there was the Berlin Conference put in place to avoid conflicts. The Europeans were able to set different African states against each other but this could not be done to the European powers as they chose to deal with their conflicts or disputes in a civilized manner, they operated together.
