Euro Disney is a case study of the result of when a company’s culture conflicts with a national culture. Euro Disney chose France as the location to build its theme park, and Disney dreamed to gain revenues and become successful as it did in Tokyo Disney Park. Disney forecasted the project by locating the theme park in French because it is a very popular destination for vacation; French has five weeks for break versus the United States has only two to three weeks of break. Also, the location in France has been the central location in Europe, where has 17 million people live around the theme park within two hours and four hours distance from those living in Britain. At that time, Euro Disney didn 't have staff housing for their employees, and there were estimated 4,000 staff members who were affected by the housing shortage according to the case. Employees had to work long hours in very hectic pace at the Euro Park. The difficulties in communication between employees and managers also caused the high employee turnover rate in the Euro …show more content…
For example, French visitors would not tolerate long waiting lines. The European and Americans’ eating habits have been different. Unlike Americans, the case had indicated, “Europeans were not accustomed to eating fast means at off hours, sometimes while walking, as were Americans, and predicted that dining facilities would have a problem serving peak demands". Euro Disney was lacking cultural sensitivity. Europeans did not want to eat fast meals while walking or standing. They felt it was a poor decision to not serve wine with meals, which has been an important French tradition. The Disney had also confirmed that these eating habits did become a problem and caused the dissatisfaction of customers. Disney of Tokyo gained lots of revenues because Japan is the country that always looked up to America for its popular culture and nobody complained about cultural pollution of Disney. Different from Japanese, Europeans has been very loyal to their own culture and they would not like to be Americanized. The case showed that “France’s intellectual community decried what they considered to be the “Cultural imperialism of Euro Disney”. Euro Disney had become symbols of America within France.
