His Highness King Claudius and the gracious Queen Gertrude, daughter of Polonius the sweet Ophelia and members of the court. Today we gather and mourn the departed. My mentor, Polonius was loyal to the crown, loyal to his children, and a man who possessed a ceaseless thirst for knowledge. Although he was my master, I could at times call him a friend, as he sent me on many personal journeys to help protect those he loved the most, his family. As we stand here today, we must remember the achievements and accomplishments that Polonius worked tirelessly for Denmark. Here, within the small walls of this chapel in Elsinore, I am both honoured and challenged to define our nation’s greatest statesman, his duty to the crown, and offer some insights into his tragic and unexpected passing. …show more content…
To know his family is to understand why Polonius lived the life he did. He lived a life of meaning and decided he would live a life for others. For Polonius, a cruel twist of fate came early. It’s no secret that a lot of what made Polonius the way he was, was just how much he loved and admired his country. He was dutiful, determined and a man admired by the king. His thirst for knowledge was appreciated by King Claudius as he often consulted Polonius for advice. Polonius felt it was his obligation to go beyond and above what is expected of him. He never once failed the king, he always completed his duties to the highest standards. Polonius puts the well-being of the country before himself, even at the expense of his own

In English literature, many authors implement specific surroundings, whether physical or not, in their works to not only affect their characters, but also to illuminate the overall significance of the work. As Pauline Hopkins, Contending Forces, wrote, “Our surroundings influence our lives and characters as much as fate, destiny or any supernatural agency.” Similar to destiny, which none can escape and all must eventually accept as their path of life, the surroundings used in literature entrap its characters to their predetermined fates. Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, provides evidence to this claim through the story of a young Prince Hamlet, who is forced into a life undesired because of the habitat he was born too. In response to his situation, Hamlet retaliates by separating himself from society and searches for his place in the world.…

3.) The fact that act II begins with Polonius sending Reynaldo to spy on Laertes, shows how Polonius is a nurturing and caring father as he makes sure Reynaldo is very careful not to ruin his son’s reputation. Showing why, later on in the play, Laertes would sacrifice his time and studies and put his life in France on hold to immediately go to Denmark and avenge his father’s death. However, it also shows how Polonius distrusts Laertes to be studying music as he’s supposed to. This can be another example of foil and similarity between Polonius and Claudius.…

These last days have been full of revelations and secrets. Yet, because of an oath I swore to my dear friend, the crown prince Hamlet, I must no disclose the details of our experiences. My only option is to lock it to my inner most thoughts. It pains me that I cannot talk freely about the information I have discovered: that the King Hamlet's death may have been caused by his brother's greed for the crown, and that the past king has appeared as an apparition to convince Hamlet to avenge his death. The fact that our present monarch, King Claudius, may have committed fratricide is a concerning thought.…

In the story, Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, Hamlet wrote his deepest love to Ophelia in a letter. Throughout the story, he may have not shown his love but deep inside he did. Hamlet obviously loved Ophelia with all his heart. Hamlet wrote a letter expressing his undying love for Ophelia even if he didn’t show it.…

    Claudius's Morality

In likeness to Polonius, Claudius’s morality truly dictates the negative consequences of his actions due partly to the fact that his relied morals are based greatly upon superficial ideals. However, the effects of Claudius’s actions extended far beyond his own downfall; as the initial conflict within the play’s plot-line, Claudius murders his brother, King Hamlet, to obtain the crown for himself. The overwhelming greed and superficiality of Denmark’s new king recognizes within himself as he questions the heavens, “May one be pardon’d and retain th’offense?” (III, iii, 56). By expelling the citizens of their just and powerful ruler through moral indecency and introducing his self as political chief for material gain, Claudius opens the state…

    Gertrude In Hamlet Essay

Queen Gertrude is generally the most overlooked of the major characters in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, particularly when one only reads the story and thus doesn’t have the constant visual reminder of a physical presence onstage. The under-recognized Queen of Denmark is in fact a stronger and more significant person than she’s generally given credit for. Perhaps the source of most readers’ dismissal of Gertrude is that one’s view of her is strongly tainted by that of Hamlet. Hamlet, with few exceptions, is the only character into whose thought processes the audience has insight.…
