As we celebrate the birth of Our Lord on this Holiest of days, we need to look at the Cross. For on this day, Salvation entered into human history. For this child, this beautiful child, is this man on the Cross. Jesus, Son of Mary, the only Begotten Son of God who bore our sins to set us free from the bondage of sin and death. For without His death, we would not be in this Church this day celebrating His birth. The joy of Christmas is not for a day or a season. It is an eternal joy, a joy that no one can take from us because it is the joy of Jesus Christ himself made present in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. The majority of us are moms, dads, grandmas, and grandpas. We know how it feels when our children or grandchildren do things that are so precious and we store them in our hearts and take them out over the years to look at and to cherish them because they are so precious to us.
Mary is no different than we are, is she. But, Mary's child is definitely not the usual child. I am sure that Jesus gave His Mother many things to hold onto during His life that our own children have given us. Imagine Mary pondering the words of the Angel Gabriel, that you would have a son without being with a man, that He would be a King, the Redeemer of man, or pondering the words of the shepherds. Imagine Mary hear Him say "Mama", see Him take His first steps, or lose His first tooth like all other children.
Now imagine losing your son for three days, or being told that a sword shall pierce your heart. Imagine your son being scourged, beaten, crucified, and dying on a cross. Imagine now the infant that you held as a child, now dead in your arms. Yet, this is the message of Christmas, "For Today a Savior has been born". It is for this reason that this child came into the world and we should rejoice and be glad.
As we celebrate this Christmas Day with family and friends, with the giving and receiving of gifts, let us take pause and ponder, like Mary, the miracle that happened this day in Bethlehem. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. To suffer, be crucified, and to die for
