Eulogy For Grandmother

The enlightening reflection of the sun shining throughout the horizon can never describe how dark and gloomy I had felt that day. I begged my grandparents to drive me to Concentra (a medical clinic), for a sports physical to tryout for volleyball (in which I wasted my summer in). Lacking prevalent thought, I begged... “Grandmama! Dwive me to Concentra, pwease! If I can drive, I wouldn’t aske.” Her beautiful droopy almond eyes turned into a puppy, who shot up its head to find for the sweet aroma of dog biscuits. She gleamingly stared at me and loudly replied,
“You are disrespectful! If it was another Asian family, they would smack you to death!” Since I am cognizant of her intentions... she will soon become the loving woman I once encountered approximately five minutes ago, and my predictions were accurate. Right when my grandpa backed out from the garage, he gently bumped into my

In a panic, he said, “What did we hit?” I sharply turned to look out the back window, and stuttered in fear, “O...h no we hit our… neighbor’s white truck.” My grandma and grandpa were heavily petrified of the consequences; therefore, they left the scene of the accident. I frighteningly raised my voice, “What if the police came here?” Calmly, her voice sputtered through my ears, “you have to handle it.” With high hopes of the police not arriving, fate occurred. I thought to myself, “Is this what I’m destined to do?” The police parked in my driveway and angrily walked through the curved path of my sidewalk, then peeked through the ecstasy of my house. Knock, Knock, “The officer is here as expected,” my mom whispered. Right then, my heart practically fell off my chest and rolled on the ground. I sighed and opened my front door slowly as it creaked into motion. When my eyes met the police officer, I smiled gracefully to mask the painstaking

You sure, positive you aren’t coming?” “Yeah, positive.” I walked a few houses down and sat on the sidewalk waiting for them to finish for an hour drive back home to our wimpy little trailer park. It was about ten minutes later I heard a scream and jumped up as they ran out of the house. They didn’t even get halfway down the road before they all got cornered by four cop cars.…

Iconic Ms. Dorothy Day: Preface” There are fewer people that could recognize a problem or issue that plagues our society; contained by reason, internalize the situation without benefiting personally, answering and muster up the fortitude to attempt a solution. This notion was embodied by Ms. Dorothy Day. All around us are passionate, loving and concerned human beings, but almost never to a fault. Some people’s sacrifices are pretentious and selfish due to the fact that the person(s) sacrifice is for a friend, relative or acquaintance. To Dorothy, it didn’t matter because she helped everyone.…

Excitement built up inside of me. We were about an hour away from my aunt’s house; I loved the thought of being with my family, but I also loved the daring and silly activities that we did when we got there. That summer, we had gone to a strawberry farm. I thought that it was going to be incredibly monotonous and absurd; but I was wrong. It was torrid and unbearable in the summer heat, and when we arrived there, I sat back and dreaded the walk, but the summer brought great things to that…

Every Christmas Eve our family gathers around the coffee table in our apartment in New York City. During the day we go to see the tree at Rockefeller Center and buy chocolate candies from the Greenwood Pastry on the corner. Uncle Riley leads the way as we walk the streets until the light begins to fade between the office towers and the crippled gargoyles forever perched on the corners of the buildings that illuminate a golden age gone by. We laugh together and reminisce about the previous Christmases we have spent together. The elevator seems quieter on these nights, almost as if it has a respect for the holiday, but I know it’s just because we’re all crammed in there together.…

As I was approaching to the house, I saw the ambulance drive away with the lights on but no siren. I got to the house, parked my car, got out to see my aunt and Miguel’s older sister crying and holding each other while being questioned by the police. My aunt answered my question with “I walked to the backyard and saw him laying facedown with the gun beside him”.…

Human experience, however varied in its details, will always be a universal factor of life. This being said, it is commonly known that people run away, either from their homes or their problems, because they believe that they alone know what’s right for them. Running away, regardless of the form it takes, is universal. What is not common about this, is what is learned from it. For me, the value of my running away is found not in the act, but in the realization of what my encounter taught me.…
