Eulogy For Father

A man who is too afraid to die, is a man who is too afraid to live and Dad certainly lived his life to the extremes. There is no lie that Shane Schofield was a fearless and valiant Lieutenant in the US Marines, but Dad also held the kind, tender qualities of a great gentleman. As his adopted daughter, I can say that he was the true light of my life, the loving and supportive parental figure I never had through my teen years into adulthood.
I’m sure you can all agree with me when I say my Dad was a dedicated, determined and very genuine man. I’ll never forget the day our paths united nearly 40 years ago. It was the day he defied all odds during the Wilkes mission. Our initial greeting, however, was before the chaos began. I commented on his funny glasses. Haha how cool I thought he was in those mesmerizing, sleek mirrors, oblivious to the fact that he never actually took them off, not even to greet me. But I never did doubt him for a moment as my faithful pet, Wendy the fur seal took an immediate liking to him, commanding him to caress her. I remember thinking how odd it was to see a Marine show any kind of gentle softness towards anything. I knew he was something special, right from that moment.

Not once would he even consider saving his own life over the life of another. I can’t count the number of times he dived head first into danger to save my life, or the lives of his fellow Marines who sit with us here today. I’m sure you all still remember the distressing moment we thought we lost Dad during the mission. But as usual, he miraculously appeared in front of me with those damn glasses still covering his eyes. But this time he took them off and comforted me. He told me that he would never let me down. Thinking now, he never has let me down. Not once. Thankyou Dad, for keeping your promise to me. It’s amazing how quick you can learn to love someone. Well, I guess not with Dad.
