(Lyons gets up from his seat, unfolds a small piece of paper with trembling fingers, and looks up at the crowd with tears in his eyes.) Lyons: I’m really honored to give an eulogy at my father Troy Maxon’s funeral. A few years ago, I would never believe that one day I would voluntarily praise my father, let alone write an eulogy for him. You see, my father and I didn’t have the most harmonious and loving father-son relationship. I never liked my father when I was young. I blamed my father for not being with me when I was growing up. Pop was serving his time in the prison for robing to support my mom and I. I’ve been bullied and teased about having no father and let papa take all the blames for my sufferings. I used to go to bed everyday thinking …show more content…
The economic was suffering and no one had no extra money to support no musicians. I lost my source of income. Bonnie left me because she could not marry someone who couldn't support his own family. I was devastated. I started to understand the situation my father was in. My father was right. You have to eat before you can live. Love and dream without financial basis are unstable and can be blown away by the slightest storm. I realized that my father was a noble and brave man who put his responsibilities to his family before everything else in the world. “A man got to take care of his family”, as my dad has said, even if it means giving up baseball and even going to prison. With no income, I had no choice but to involve in some illegal conducts that I’m not proud of. I was caught and thrown into prison while illegally cashing someone else’s check. It was in the cold dark cell that I realized how similar I am to my father. We were both young and ambitious once, chasing the wildest dream and feeling that there’s nothing we could not achieve in this world. My father made the mistake of sticking to his illusions for too long. He has always wanted me to learn from his mistakes and be realistic. But I never listened. It is a cruel realization for both papa and I that the only thing that separates us is the matter of several years. I am becoming him even though we both tried to avoid it. Now I know that papa wanted to raise me as a responsible and

A bond between a child and a father can be very strong no matter the difficulties they have to face. Sometimes, the conflict can be as simple as an addiction that could separate the two. The narrator of the poem is looking back on a fond memory he has had with his father. As he recollects on the past, the reader gets to see how much love he has for his dad. “Death of a Young Son by Drowning” by Margaret Atwood tells the very vivid story of a mother’s son’s death. The tone used by the author was reflective, happy, and yet still sorrowful. Atwood sort of describes the son’s death as an adventure, giving the poem a happy and optimistic tone. She uses words that make it seem almost like a journey, for instance in line 4 she uses “voyage,” in line 25 “long trip,” and line 13 “reckless adventurer,” that make it seem almost exciting. There is also a shift in tone in lines 16-18 when she says, “There was an accident; the air locked, he was hung in the river like a heart.…

Mothers are always going to be caring for their children no matter what they go though. These poems show the morals that the mothers try to pass on to their sons to succeed in life. Both of them are pretty strict and straight forward with their words but try to be kind in a way that their sons would understand what they went through. In the poems, “My Mother” by Robert Mezey and “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughs, there is a direct correlation between the relationship of mother and son, the mother’s ethnicity and personality with the morals they instill on their sons.…

In the poems “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes and “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou both authors convey the same message which is overcoming hardships in life. In the two poems they show their similarities through repetition which will be shown in the first paragraph and literary devices such as figurative language, metaphors and similes, while also showing their differences through parallel structure of both the poems, and through rhetorical questions. Hughes and Angelou show their similarities through repetition which helps the reader grasp the key concept of both poems which is to overcome obstacles. In “Mother to Son” it repeats “Life for me ain’t no crystal stair” (Hughes 2). Meaning that life has not treated the narrator of the…
