I had just moved to Nome and at that time I felt as if I was dying as the snow covered me. There had been bad winter in Texas but there was nothing as horrendous as this. I didn’t want to move. I didn't want to knock on the door for them to let me in. I didn't want to see my brother or my father and his new wife that wasn’t my mom. I was angry at him, but I knew I couldn't blame him. I could only blame myself for this. If I wasn't born she wouldn't have died.
I stood on the porch of the small home, hugging myself as I shivered against the furious wind. I knocked on the door, feeling the skin on my knuckle crack and teared and while blood started to form. It burn like crazy as soft little droplets of snow landed on it. Then a women with streak of grey in her hair and wrinkled cheeks slowly open the door. I gritted my teeth as she

They were so fast that I don’t think just the naked eyes could see it. I went closer between the crow of people surrounding the area and I saw it. I saw the wolf like dogs and a deeply cover man run. The novel, Into the Wild, written by Jon Krakauer, is a riveting, cautionary tale about the death of Chris McCandless, a young man who embarks on a journey to Alaska to seek the truth of happiness through the solitude of nature and free himself from the constraints of society. No doubt, the ongoing theme throughout Krakauer’s novel is the dysfunctional father-son relationship between Chris and his dad. In fact, McCandless died before he had the chance to grow out of his anger. Into the Wild examines the fatal expedition of Chris McCandless as he breaks all ties from society and challenges his ability to survive in the wilderness. Through the use of primary sources, situational irony, and syntax, Krakauer thoroughly captures the compelling tragedy of Chris McCandless.…

Chris McCandless died alone in the Alaskan wild while living completely off of the land. “Some readers admired the boy immensely for his courage and noble ideals:” while “: others fulminated that he was a reckless idiot, a wacko, a narcissist who perished out of arrogance and stupidity-and was undeserving of the considerable media attention he received” (Krakauer xi). These quotes represent the feelings of many who read Into The Wild, but most people ignore the important aspects of Chris McCandless’ personality and his self imposed purpose. McCandless was a kind, intelligent and free-spirited young man who may not have been completely prepared for his journey, he was able to accept death in the end, knowing that he lived a life that too…

In efforts to find more meaning in their lives, many philosophers and adventurers have followed the path to discover themselves outside of civilization. Thoreau was most known for his transcendental experiences he wrote of in Walden. Henry Ticknor once said that “individuals have used the wilderness as a metaphor for life’s vicissitudes”, and many since Thoreau have sought out their own “spiritual rebirths” in nature (Ticknor 3).Chris McCandless was one who attempted to relive Thoreau’s exploits, but for as much as nature deals life it also deals death. In August 1992, McCandless was discovered dead in Alaska. Jon Krakauer wrote Into the Wild, after being inspired by McCandless’s story, and many more since then have followed in his footsteps (Krakauer--).…

For three years, Father had refused the idea of leaving North Carolina. But my brother, Ben, sent us another letter, addressed as he always did to John Benjamin Wilks and Katie. In the letter Ben was praising his new farm, the richness of the land and how many more acres he was clearing. He told of the bountiful crops of corn and wheat that he would be reaping in a few weeks, more corn and wheat per acre than Father had ever gotten from our old worn out farm in North Carolina. He told of the abundance of water, game, and timber.…
