I think like Dee most people do not know or care about their own family history. From an early age Dee fantasied of living a different life, she wanted more than what her mother could offer her. I believe this is why she denied her family because by denying her family she could deny her family history. I ponder if Dee wanted the quilt and the carved dasher to go with her new found facade, so she could brag that she inherit it from her ancestors.

I was not sure at the beginning if there was any change in Dee from before she went to college to when she came back to visit because she always been an insensitive and selfish person. I do believe now that she did change because she found an escape from the reality of her poor and nonintellectual
