In this passage, Pirjo, who has discovered that her son Simon is gay, struggles with the fact that she will have to carry the heavy burden of loving and caring for a gay son in a conservative Christian community. This passage not only reveals that Pirjo is angry, sad, and even slightly ashamed of the burden she has to carry, but it also highlights the social stigma attached to being gay or lesbian in the Laestadian Church. Literally, Pirjo is shocked and upset to find out that Simon is gay, as she now has to be “the mother with the gay son” and “carry the burden of Simon with her.” On a larger level, however, Pirjo is ashamed of her son’s sexual orientation, as she, like the rest of her church, believes that homosexuality is a sin; that it…

Memory can be twisted based on grief and guilt. A good example of this is in “The Scarlet Ibis”, by James Hurst. The story is written as a memory of the protagonist’s brother Doodle. The events that play out make it really easy to blame Brother for Doodle’s death, and make it harder to analyze him because we only know him in relation to the memories and events he is recalling. He points out all he things he did wrong, this makes it where the readers will most likely leave the story with a negative impression of him, and forget that he was just a child when all this happened.…

Memories are an individual’s stored experiences from certain moments in his or her past. Memories carry feelings based on the experience such as nostalgia when thinking about a past lover or anger when thinking about a moment of betrayal, but these remembered feelings and saved perceptions of the situation do not always match the physical impact of the event. Children are especially susceptible to this as innocence softens the severity of situations. In the excerpt from her story “Cherry Bomb,” Maxine Clair explores a myriad of literary techniques in order to characterize the narrator’s childhood memories as positive even though in reality are depressive.…

Your parents might let them get away with more than they ever let you get away with, or they might even take up for them more than they would you. Having your parents and relatives take up for them in times that you know they should be either upset or disappointed in them might make you try to point it out to them. It would create an internal battle with your emotions for your brother/sister and your parents and relatives.…

Memory decay, distorted memory, hindsight bias, consistency bias, the availability heuristic bias and suggestibility- are all problems that beset our reliance on memory. “I was there. I saw it.”…

Comparing autobiographic memory of two individuals that experienced the same event, is a useful way of understanding the relative accuracy of human memory in context with our daily lives. To test this myself, I had my mother recall the time when we got my dog, which happened about eight years ago, and compared that to my recollection of the same event. We both stated the same sequence of events in getting the dog, such as my brother and his fiancé getting one, and me asking for one from the same litter. We also agreed on the people involved, like my brother, his fiancé, and my step dad, though she remembered the people we got him from as well. While we both got the same gist of the events, we did differ in some of the details, for instance,…

Interviewing retired educator, Art Huinker, about his lifetime reading experiences was a very enlightening journey that took us back to the late 1930’s when reading to a child was not as much of a priority for parents as it is today, nor were books as accessible in the home setting, like they are now. As a youngster growing up on a farm in rural Festina, Iowa, Huinker states, “We had a newspaper in the house and a farm journal, but outside of that we did not have any books available for leisure reading.” Moreover, the role of reading in his early life was primarily connected to his academic world where he advanced through the ranks, and eventually achieved a four-year degree at Loras College, while passionately pursuing a career in professional baseball. After marrying Ann, his high school sweetheart, and starting a family of their own, Huinker went on to achieve his dream of pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals and in later years, wrote about his success in the book, “Small Man, Big Heart.” At the end of his sports career Huinker transitioned to a professional career in education that ended as a history professor at Loras College in…
