If I’ve caused any confusion, the above jumble of numbers simply means “hello!”—but in binary. And, while the above might not seem like a language, never mind a way of communicating, it’s how computers understand each other. Computers, like us, can speak many languages, too.
I am captivated by language: etymology, regional differences, syntax. Whether it’s examining how the traditional brown and white dress worn by capuchin monks inspired the cappuccino, or contemplating the astrological meaning of “disaster”—“dis,” meaning contrary, and “aster,” meaning star, therefore, “contrary to the stars”—words carry an immeasurable weight.

I ask my grandfather about my family back in Uganda, and pore over my grandmothers’ sanskrit music annotation. I add languages onto my ever-expanding “to learn” list; in school, I learned Spanish, then switched to French, and after a trip to Italy this summer, I became determined to learn Italian and Latin. In grade six, though, I learned a different kind of …show more content…
These linguistic influences have shaped me, giving me insight into other worlds and other times. Whether it’s a computer or a human speaking, I seek to understand the dialect, and continue expanding my vocabulary.
At Cornell’s college of Arts and Sciences, I hope to take classes in linguistics and artificial intelligence – and watch both languages collide, intertwine, and merge. I can’t wait to make new friends and write down their American and global regionalisms in my little book, while sharing my Canadian ones. Through the school’s flexible program, offering humanities courses and computer science within the same college, I’ll have the ability to pursue both my interests concurrently. Rather than subjecting students to computer science in an engineering context, Cornell allows for interdisciplinary learning, affirming my belief that technology is a means to an end, in that, it allows for enhanced human connection and innovation. At Cornell, my love of language will flourish. Cornell will allow me to fulfill my desire to delve deeper into coding languages, discovering how I can use technology to converse and connect with those around
