Another fundament power of rhetoric is pathos, or emotion, which the advertisement also exhibits through a humorous technique. One key element necessary for a successful argument is sympathy or to share the audience’s mood. Viewers can sympathize with Couric and Gumbel even though they are celebrities because they share the same confusion at learning new things. The ad also achieves sympathy through storytelling in a humorous skit rather than simply rattling off logistics. Humor is an emotion that, if played correctly, can draw an audience in and keep them listening. In this case, the dialog between the two celebrities draws out a humorous tone.
