Music lyrics express emotions, experiences, and tell stories. They are used to communicate with other people and for the artist to express themselves through song. “Music is what feelings sounds like” (Georgia Gates). The lyrics of popular music shouldn’t be censored because they aren’t harmful to children’s development, lyrics have meaningful content, they help people through rough times, and they teach about the world. Many favorite artists come from unique backgrounds, “some had to deal with their friends dying … others had to deal with their mothers being prostitutes, and maybe they had to deal with not having their dad around” (University Wire). Music has a way of affecting the emotions and mood of a person, “Hip-Hop helped heal me” (Newman Perkins). Sometimes it can be easy to get caught up in certain words an artist chose to use and forget the message being expressed behind the beat. Music is in every part of the world accepted by many cultures in many different ways. Music is used for religious worship, learning, celebrating, relaxing, focusing, etc. “The question of who's singing and who's being sung to--is an important one” (Abebe, Nitsuh). Different music has different purposes and is intended for a certain audience. There is music for children to listen to, there is music for adults to listen to, and there is plenty of music for all ages to enjoy. Some words used in certain music can be offensive to children. This is all about perspective though. “It only lets me know that the person who said it is frightened by my powers, abilities and strengths,” (Trice, Dawn T.) says one young girl for the Chicago Tribune.
