By including pictures from his childhood, for example, a photo with his grandfather, this creates an appeal to the pathos of the audience. Humans are known to have two weak spots when it comes to sensitivity; these include animals and children. The inclusion of the photo of Barack Obama bonding with his grandfather evokes a sense of happiness and sentimental feelings, both in which create a feeling of closer and more personal attachment to Obama as a person, not a president in particular.
