Her speech is very casual, and this leads to the audience allowing their guards to drop, and are much more easily swayed by the pathos she presents. This strategy is very effective, as it allows for the talk to become a much more intimate and heartfelt dialogue than it would be otherwise. Brené Brown’s The Power of Vulnerability is extraordinarily effective at conveying this message of opening yourself up being the “key to happiness” in a sense, as she even does it herself within the talk to wonderful…

Pathos = emotional appeals Logos = intelligence and reason = logical organization The advertisement I have selected for my project deals with the subject of environmental conservation and health problems. The campaign ad is a photograph that expresses the importance of public sanitation and keeping our waters clean, for the downstream health consequences of people, who feed and live off the ocean. For my FOA I’ve decided to pick the most iconic movie speech of all time from the final installment of the Rocky franchise released in 2006. The learning outcome I wish to achieve from my FOA is to demonstrate an awareness of how language and meaning are shaped by culture and context. Rocky Balboa (starring Sylvester Stallone), the 6th and final installment of the “Rocky” franchise, is the story of a retired boxing champion who surprisingly comes out of his retirement to face one final opponent in a 10-round exhibition match. Since Rocky is retired, his opponent has specific advantages over him already, which in turn worries Rocky’s family for even accepting the challenge in the first place. In the first half of the movie, Rocky’s son struggles with this fact,…

In my search for a video to write over, I stumbled upon a title that struck me immediately. “There’s more to life than being happy” is a speech written by Emily Esfahani Smith and covers a deep issue that society faces. What is the purpose of life? According to Smith, meaning in life gives people something to hold on to, which, consequently, brings a deeper fulfillment than superficial happiness. Utilizing the three essential appeals to an audience; ethos, logos, and pathos, Smith has created a speech that captures her audience's interest, effectively sends her message, and impresses upon a person what they should be searching for.…
