Victor Hugo once said. “Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” In essence, music is the not the cause, but the effect of an individual’s circumstances and culture. Contradictory to this hypothesis, there are skeptics that believe art is the cause and culture is the effect. Is one solely right or do both ideas hold validity?…
Pathos can be described as an appeal to emotion. Pathos not only persuades using emotional responses but is used to sway people’s views in a way that cannot be achieved by either logos or pathos. There is no logic involved in pathos and leaves the audience with no reason to reject the opinion in front of them. Lewis uses Pathos in “The Abolition of Man” a bit differently than others would in a persuasive work. Lewis will provide an argument with lots of appeals to logos, and then reinforce that argument with a portion of emotional appeal.…
The most recent estimate of more than 30,000 gangs represents a 15 percent increase from 2006 and is the highest annual estimate since 1996. Gang violence in America has been a major problem in this country which affects several communities and several major cities all throughout America. If gang violence awareness can be more available to areas where it is most popular and holding seminars and informational classes about what the gang life can cause, then there will be a decrease in gang related activity. In America, there has been a rapid increase in gang violence and gang related activity which affects the countries major cities. While larger cities and suburban counties expectedly report higher numbers of gangs, there is also considerable variation within each area type.…
Pathos is the tactical use of emotional appeal to convince people of their point of view. Specter uses the pathos all through his speech. For example, he starts by giving an example of how smallpox, a once deadly disease has been eliminated through the use of vaccines, giving a poor person the ability to live a long and healthy life just like a rich person did, at the height of the smallpox disease. Specter specifically notes, “A kid born in New Delhi today can expect to live as long as the richest man did 100 years ago.” In the middle of the speech, he gives examples of how the US society is now free of measles, a disease that wiped out entire populations hundreds of years back.…

Music is all around us, playing in shopping malls, on television, in elevators, and stored on our personal electronic devices. Music has the ability to change one’s mood to either positive or negative based on the genre and the lyrics a song. To determine if there is a correlation between music genres and deviant behavior, researchers Jeffery Lozon and Moshe Bensimon examines genres as alternative rock, hard rock, heavy metal, hip-hop/rap, punk rock, rock and electronic/techno to see if it influences an individual’s behavior negatively. Researchers Lozon and Bensimon expect to find that music as those listed above will have a connection to aggressive behavior and possible deviant activity.…
Bleh, locking down a clear understanding of ethos, pathos, and logos took a significant amount of time and research. Being able to apply this concept to a paper I found to be even more difficult especially in clarifying ethos and logos. In my mind, I over simplified the two concepts to ethos equaling credibility and logos to mean the accuracy of the information, but in my research, this was not always the case. In a basic Google search of rhetoric and web design, many sources stated that logos was the layout and ease of use of a website. The ethos, on the other hand, was how "professional" the website looked.…
There have been several deaths caused by the plaguing addiction of drugs and alcohol. Drug use is becoming a growing problem that needs to be contained and prevented with the help of an expansion of the organization LAPP (Licking County Alcoholism Prevention Program) branching out into its own center called EPLAPP, (Extensive Progression of Licking County Alcoholism Prevention Program). To cut back on the drug use and deaths in Licking County, EPLAPP will provide users and abusers with the resources they need to sober up, cutting back on the drug use rate which will cut back the number of deaths. With the creation of EPLAPP, the services being provided will be more in depth and help some with more employees/volunteers to help addicts, along with other resources, such as financial aid, counseling, and sober living facilities. To persuade readers that the expansion is the best way to combat drug abuse, the use of ethos, pathos, and logos will be implemented.…
