Cyber bullying in schools has become an underlying issue the past several years. In previous situations, the bullying would occur on campuses, and the administration would see it on the school cameras, or could witness it face to face along with other students noticing it. Though online, it is a whole different scenario. The perpetrators could write anything on the internet, and not necessarily be caught by the administration, who normally only observes what happens directly on the campus. In the Public Service Announcement (PSA), “Cyberbullying”, produced by the American Bar Association, Matt Lanter’s use of pathos, expresses his idea of cyberbullying in schools being an issue clearer than his use of ethos and logos. Matt Lanter from the 9:02 show states, “Using the internet to bully someone is called cyberbullying and sadly this is becoming a huge problem in today’s schools. The consequences can be disastrous both for the victims and the perpetrator” (Cyberbullying PSA). This is a strong opening statement that catches the reader’s attention and is then followed by a scene of three high school girls scheming a plan to get revenge on another girl who is having a casual conversation in the hallway with one of their boyfriends. The girls start by calling her ugly names to each other which is seemingly harmless, considering they were just venting over jealously. However, later in the film, the girls sat outside in the football field and began thinking of ideas of what they could do to tarnish her reputation. One of the girl’s states “No more Jenna after what we have planned for her.” The girls respond by laughing obnoxiously, and asking each other, “Can you get her email and cell phone” (Cyberbullying PSA). For example, they refer to her as “fat pig slut” and decide to post it on a public social media sight that everyone they go to school with reads. These opening scenes and details are important to informing the audience of what instigated them to want to engage in this bullying behavior, and is then followed by a series of negative outcomes that …show more content…
In the opening of the film, a subtitle appears on the screen stating that the presentation has been produced by the American Bar Association Section of Anti-Trust in 2010. While this is an important citation needed, it is not enough to prove the credibility of the video. Before the scene begins, a high schooler named Matt Lanter says he is from the 9:02 and he begins to plea a generalized case that “bullying is never right” (Cyber bullying PSA). Matt Lanter is not a scholarly figure who has studied the specific laws on cyber bullying nor is he a trained professional in the school district. The video would have been more sophisticated if a leader from the American Bar Association who is knowledgeable in the laws, would have done an opening speech on the legalities of the severity of cyber bullying crimes. Furthermore, the organizations displayed in the screen title at the end of the video, should have done the pre-closing statement to the video. When the authorities arrived in the room to escort the three girls out the classroom to be investigated, they should have given more insight on who they were. They appeared professional, however, the audience was not told what department they work for, and they did not introduce themselves. Moreover, if they would have explained who they were and what they were credible in, this would have been a strong preclosing statement. Matt Lanter’s conclusive statement, “If
