Ethnography: Observing the Upper Quad The location chosen was strategic, to see how people reacted, and what kind of people would come around this particular spot. The location was the upper quad while sitting down at the concrete benches to have a full view of the upper quad at Mars Hill University. This location gave full viewing opportunities to not one, but six buildings on the upper quad: Spilman, Marshbanks, McConnel, Business Building, Rural Heritage Museum, and the Founders Hall, which does not include other buildings like: Moore, Day and Cornwell, which impacted the observation as well. This unique location showed the difference in the environment as well as the different patterns and way people reacted to this certain location on …show more content…
At first the study possibly could have concluded that more girls were walking through the upper quad because they were walking back to their dorms: Stroup, Huffman, and Edna Moore, from the cafeteria. The first day of observation, there was a ratio of 1:6 with one being the guy and six being the girls. As the other two observations became finalized, there was a more equal ratio, meaning that Monday around 6:00 could have been an outlier regarding gender. More girls were also traveling in groups during all three days of observations, possibly due to the idea of safety in numbers.
Age
Age played an important role in these observations. The time of day affected the movement or flow of people which also spotlighted the idea of age. Non-college students such as adults with a job were moving or leaving certain building like, Spilman, the Business Building, and Marshbanks, on Monday and Thursday during the late afternoon, perhaps they were getting off work. College students were walking in these buildings, and the upper quad more around Sunday night, and Thursday during lunch. The younger college students looked like they were more in rush than the working adults did as well.

Performing ethnographic fieldwork can be challenging, especially when it comes to building rapport with your subjects. Often times the subjects of the research may feel intimidated, judged or like they won’t be understood when being interviewed. In order to get the best results from their research, fieldworkers need to make sure their subjects feel comfortable in sharing all aspects of their life in regards to what they are studying. Anne Fadiman and Joshua Reno both work to build relationships with the people they study through participant observation to gain trust and get an inside look into their social and cultural worlds.…

When we fail to comply with certain standards, which are put in place by society we are often shunned from those who choose to comply with these values. After observing different social settings as well as the expected behavior in those settings I choose to focus my attention on ordering etiquette in fast food restaurants. In each of the fast food restaurants I observed in both the Hub and along downtown East College Avenue I noticed three elements of expected behavior. The first was to place an order to your cashier in first person. The second, consumers were expected to pay for their purchases.…

So I do not have a lot of knowledge of many outside religions, this class has opened my eyes up to the views of many other religions and one of those that has caught my eye was Buddhism. Some of the reasons I was attracted to learning more about the Buddhist religion it seems like a very peaceful and relaxed religion also its followers seem to be very spiritually in touch. As a follower of the catholic religion I do not see a lot of those things within my religion, and that is the reason why I wanted to learn more about the Buddhist religion. Growing up…

First of all, the question we are going to explore is “Whether or not playing video games increase aggressive behavior in children?” The independent variable will be violent and nonviolent video games, and the dependent variable is how much aggression was demonstrated. I will be using the naturalistic observation and experimentation methods to answer this hypothesis. According to Openstak (2014) “the greatest benefit of natural observation is the validity, or accuracy of information collected unobtrusively in a natural setting.”…

“In this ideology, walking functions as an emblem of the simple man and as, when the walk is solitary and rural, a means of being in nature and outside of society”(Solnit, Pg. 18) Walking is always overlooked, and is only looked at as one way of many to get from point A to point B. I feel Solnit had a great point when she illustrates how important walking is in the world. Walking is a great way to connect to your environment. When you walk you are always connected with your environment. You are looking at different things, walking on different surfaces, touching different objects, and are breathing and smelling various substances. I feel you cannot have environmental art without including walking.…
