I moved here to Amory from Passaic, New Jersey when I was 5 years old. The school year had already started and I was placed in Mrs. Haney’s kindergarten class and took speech class for my lisp. I came in march but adjusting and making friends at that age was easy; but I was learning on a total different curriculum in Passaic, which at the time focused on keeping us from discriminating against the other kids we went to school with in our widely diverse community in kindergarten and a rigorous reading program in first grade, which I did not get to attend. Kindergarten was graded on such an easy scale that it went unnoticed that I could only recognize a few words. During the summer I went to day camps at West Amory Community Center. One day we …show more content…
He made me start all the way over. He taught me new methods that helped my speech sound somewhat like English instead of a foreign language. I would read words straight from the dictionary so I could see pronunciation. After a month of small exercises and short readings I read my first book, Wocket in my Pocket, by Dr. Seuss. In the middle of July was the first time I was able to join reading day with the rest of the kids. We were in the reading circle and the counselor asked if anyone would like to read. I was the first to shoot my hand up. I bounced to the stool in the middle of the carpet. I began to read the book out loud without any help. I am sure no one understood anything I said because then my lisp made me sound like I was talking with my mouth full under water. I was so proud I could read I read that same book for a week. I still have the same book in my room on my bookshelf. It is personally my favorite book. The next year, when school started back for first grade I was in Mrs. Garth’s class. I went to the library 2 days a week, every week. I finally reached 100 book requirement need to become an accelerated reader the last day before Christmas break. We got to wear pajamas to school ad read and watch The Polar Express. I read the final eight books to reach my 100 book goal. When I came back to school in January I got my certificate, laminated accelerated reader badge, and picture in the newspaper. I remember

Performing ethnographic fieldwork can be challenging, especially when it comes to building rapport with your subjects. Often times the subjects of the research may feel intimidated, judged or like they won’t be understood when being interviewed. In order to get the best results from their research, fieldworkers need to make sure their subjects feel comfortable in sharing all aspects of their life in regards to what they are studying. Anne Fadiman and Joshua Reno both work to build relationships with the people they study through participant observation to gain trust and get an inside look into their social and cultural worlds.…

Ironically, though I wasn’t immediately taken with reading, I became an avid reader after those first few difficult years. I was a regular at my elementary school’s small library, and I competed in everything book-related that I could. Battle of the books, spelling bees, and English classes were my favorite pastimes in grade school. Other children dreaded completing summer reading and literature studies, but I looked at reading…

Key performance indicators (KPIs) are measurable metrics that evaluate factors crucial to achieving the company’s goals and maintaining growth (Karlson, 2015). KPI dashboards are used to analyse and display the performance of an organisation to help managers make unbiased goal-oriented decisions. Considering Droplet’s business service and the start-up early stage, the recommended KPIs include customer retention rate, monthly burn rate, popular areas, time and type of used service. Droplet’s app or online system should be able to effectively track the customer retention rate and provide data of the number of loyal customers and their specific traits. Analytical tools communicate and measure the strategic objectives that drive behaviour at the organisational level (Triplett, 2012).…

My first memory of reading was when I was little, about 4 or 5, and my mom would read to me when I was going to bed. By far my favorite book that she would read to me was “Where The Wild Things Are”. I loved the way the booked looked with the faded looking colors that made it look old and I loved the pictures of the wild things and how the kid was the king and everyone listened to him and I just loved it.…

My first image, which conveyed detail, depicted a banquet being served on the Dean Dome basketball court. I chose to use this image for several reasons, including its repetitiveness, unique color, and relative uniformity. Although many of my classmates chose to photograph minute details of a single subject, such as a piece of wood or stream of running water, I found that this photograph was more expressive of detail in a much larger subject. When taking this photo, I intended to capture as many people as possible with a maximal amount of clarity. This would allow my audience to view the scene as a whole before zooming in to study each individual.…

Why You Should Read To Your Children I have a four year old son, and I read to him every single night. I believe that reading to him encourages his imagination, literary skills and helps us to build a bond. When I read to my son I can the little wheels in his head turning. He asks questions, and tells me what about the story that he thinks is interesting and what he would change. Often times when we are playing together he will bring something I read to him from a story into his imaginative play time.…

My class would go once a week to check out books. Some books I can remember checking out a lot were “Danny The Dinosaur”, and my favorites “The Rainbow Fish”, and “Stellaluna”. I remember everyone in my class racing into the library to get one of those books first to check it out. My first writing experience that I can remember also occurred in first grade. All the kids in my class were given several pencils with pencil grips on them to help us write.…

Ethnography is a participant-observer qualitative research method which involves an integrative analysis of behaviors, values, and patterns of interaction within a specific culture-sharing group (Creswell, 2013). It is a method that stems from cultural anthropology and sociology, wherein the researcher spends extended periods of time as a participant in the group of study, interviewing, observing, and sharing their cultural experiences. According to Creswell (2013), the process of ethnography begins with questions related to problems of the group, followed by systematic observations, detailed descriptions, coding, and finally synthesizing the data with theoretical foundations, artifacts, journals, or other data, used to interpret meaning.…

An ethnographically guided research methodology is used to conduct this research (Hamersely, 1992). Ethnography was developed by anthropologists in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for the study of small-scale, traditional, isolated societies, although it is now widely used by practitioners of many disciplines in all kinds of research settings (Angrosino, 2007). Ethnography is a plan of action or strategy of investigation in which the researcher studies an intact cultural group over a prolonged period of time in a naturalistic setting to understand research problems on the basis of how people's values and beliefs direct their actions and therefore understanding those actions (Crede and Borrego, 2013). Ethnography research methodology…

At the beginning of the semester I was pessimistic about this class. I did not know what to expect and I let all feministic stereotypes take control over what the course was going to be like. Intersectionality has been at the forefront on what I have learned in this class.…

Data collection and analysis methods are well known that directly affect the successful outcome of any research (Bamkin, Maynard, & Goulding, 2016). The use of grounded theory with ethnography combined can give a clear answer to the research question. Ethnographic can describe the lived experience of those who suffered from toxic leadership while the grounded theory can explain why these events occurred. Both methods will provide a greater deal of detail than one approach can provide alone (Bamkin, Maynard, & Goulding, 2016). More recently, the grounded theory ethnography has begun to build momentum and gain popularity among qualitative researchers (Babchuk, & Hitchcock, 2013).…

When I was just a toddler, I remember having to sound out phrases, words, and sentences to develop my writing, reading and speech skills. My parents placed me in a private Christian school, Wesleyan Christian Academy, to assure that I was taught with the foundations and morals of Christianity. Wesleyan encouraged nightly readings for all the children to develop educated kids, and to expand our knowledge. Being a stubborn child, I only read the books I thought were interesting. This was not a good habit of mine from the beginning, but it was how I enjoyed reading.…

Imagine leaving your home country only to go to a foreign place, now referred to as “home” and being forced to attend school without knowing the language. My family immigrated from Kosovo to the United States in January of 2004. I was only 5 years old at the time, so learning another language was fairly easy. My parents eagerly wanted to enroll me in school, and after only a few weeks of settling in my parents along with my uncle scheduled a meeting with the local elementary school. I was accepted and attended kindergarten at two elementary schools, which was tiring but beneficial to me learning English faster.…

For my ethnographic inquiry, I chose to start reaching gay individuals brought up in religious households. I believe that this cultural setup of people is important, in our world. I feel that the religious society already has a preconceived notion that, because if you are gay, you can not have a place in organized religious groups. I was raised in a Catholic household and went to a Catholic school, so for a long time, I was scared to find out my identity because I was told that I would go to hell for not being straight. I lived in fear and it also made me lose face value on who I really was.…
