To accomplish this ethnographic study, I propose using a mixed method approach for data collection to identify and assess educational strategies and learning environments that promote empathy and metacognition. Ethnography is appropriate because it focuses on understanding the patterns of a cultural group that may include values, beliefs and interactions (Creswell, 2007).
Measurement Tools
I would like to employ three measurement tools:
1. The Social Empathy Index as formulated by Segal (2011). This model outlines three components—interpersonal empathy, contextual understanding and social responsibility.

For triangulation purposes, I will collect quantitative data from Abitur test results and NEPS longitudinal data to support and compare to the qualitative findings. This research study will be supported by theoretical developments in literature from psychological and educational sciences.
Participants
Teachers and their secondary school students: I intend to interview and observe willing teachers in secondary schools in the Bamberg/Nuremberg area and students who take their classes. Through qualitative observations, note-taking and semi-structured interviews over the course of a school year, the study will examine teachers’ self-identified empathy and metacognitive skills along with students’ perception of teacher empathy and metacognition as well as their own. At the end of the year, I will compare quantitative data from their Abitur exam scores as a learning outcome.
