Rede Rede, an archaic word meaning to offer counsel, or to give advice to another. Its roots come from an Old English term, raeden, meaning to discern, advice, explain, interpret, or read. Simply put, to counsel, as a rede offers advice on ethical behavior, and often involves recommending concepts of what Is considered correct, and incorrect behavior. As a non-binding statement, it is not considered a law, simply advice. The Ten Commandments, the Golden Rule, the Wiccan rede are all way of describing the same thing; behavior that is the core of our beliefs and the foundation for how we chose to live our life. Ethics is how we honor our Divine, ourselves, and other. Civilization as we know it would cease to exist without ethics. The entirety of the Wiccan Rede is eight simple words; “An it harm none, do what ye will.” The rede leaves us to make judgments on our own in pursuing a course of action is worthwhile, or not. Each decision must be carefully considered, and all possible consequences of our actions must be evaluated as to whether they will cause harm to any. The main idea is the word harm, as opposed to hurt. For instance, two individuals are applying for the same job. Putting individual circumstances aside, I get the job over the other candidate, my intent was to not hurt her, but in securing the job instead of her, I caused harm. Obviously not my intent to do that to her, but that is the reality of the given situation. As opposed to the boss who out of simple spite chooses to promote one employee over another, is hurting both employees. Abiding by a rede has to do with our intention, and doing or best in our daily
