Many are so consumed by the opinions of society and what society wants that they change their morals to suit the needs of others in order to please them. Humans would rather fail honorably than succeed and be made fun of. This is shown all over the world, even if it goes unnoticeable. Say a group of children were bullying one child although some children in the group knew that what they were doing was unethical, they most likely wouldn’t speak up only because they are afraid of being made fun of themselves. Shooting an Elephant by George Orwelll shows this theory well, the author was a police officer, and in the time he lived police officers were hated by many, and in a way he was often the “bullied child”, until one day he received a call about an elephant that was causing havoc and nobody but George could stop it. At this moment George was no longer the one being bullied, instead he was expected to step up and kill the elephant. The author notes that he had no plans of shooting the elephant, he wasn’t going to go against his code of ethics if it didn’t need to be done.
