Ethics is moral perspective concerning actions or decisions as being right or wrong, evil or good, or socially accepted. Ethics shapes our values and decisions made in life depending on the ethics system that influences our mindset through life experiences and peers. Ethics of virtue finds emphasizes on one’s character rather than consequences faced due to their good will. Ethics of formalism focuses on logic and laws and disregards judgement which results in all actions committed in good will. Utilitarianism results in the greater good of society and acceptable practice if the end justice the means. The officers you ride with are great and let you come along on everything they do. One day, the officer you are riding with takes you along on a drug raid. You are invited to come in when the house is secure, and you observe 6 young men sitting on 2 sofas in the living room. The officers are ransacking the house and asking the young men where they have hidden the drugs. 4 of the youths are black and 2 are white. Once of the officers walks behind the sofa where the black youths are sitting and slaps each one hard on the side of the head as he walks past. He ignores the 2 white youths sitting on the other sofa. You are shocked by his actions, but you know if you say anything, your chance of being hired by this agency will be very small. Despite lack of experience, as an officer of law you must exemplify altruism, duty, honesty, justice, and loyalty. While the suspect receives forceful acts from other officer, the rookie should be concerned with the interest of the suspect to assure the right level of force is being exerted. The duty of the officer is to promote and uphold their duty to report any unethical actions or misconduct of others, including their fellow officers. Being honest on the stand when asked to testify allows for justice to be served and prevent future occurrences as such.
