This essay compares two individuals who have willing made a choice of conduct in the way they portray themselves to other people. These individual acted in a manner that certain people would consider to be ethical or unethical behavior in society. Ethics is defined as moral principle that governs over a person or group behavior. Sister Doris was an individual who was acting in the interest of others rather than self-interest can be described as ethical, whereas other would not. The individual that would not like in Trading Places, Ophelia who at varies times showed ethical and unethical behavior. In this essay, I will relate the choice of conduct, ethical behavior and obligation of moral principle, Sister Doris undeniably showed the right …show more content…
A utilitarian looks at benefits and consequences of every situation. When looking at these different situations, a utilitarian would go for the best course of action because the benefits outweigh the harm for the both situation, particularly for Ophelia who became rich from the action whereas Sister Doris got the CEO company to be priced at half its value and now the CEO is working with company to find qualified individuals for the board. Also, from the Sister Doris view in utilitarian view would portray Sister Doris as an ethical person essential with the fact of the story that there is no bad outcome for her. She emphasized to the CEO duty to give everyone a fair chance on the board while the CEO said the board is fine with the fact that majority is white on board putting people on the board for other reason than them qualifying is ethical. On the other hand, Ophelia has an outcome that is very bad, which is going to jail for insider trading because she had knowledge of information that those others did not have access to. Insider trading is illegal and that would make her behavior unethical because she acted on the knowledge as well as assisted in getting the information. I would defend Sister Doris as an ethical person because while the CEO was verbally abusing her she kept her composure and still tried to help the minorities as well as women be considered being qualified for the board. As for Ophelia I would challenge her as being an ethical person for the fact that her behavior to help another was due to financial gain in return for
