Utilitarianism from the Food Industries point of view is that they are promoting to the greater good of humanity. They are growing and distributing more food at a cheaper price. Utilitarianism, according to Britannica Academic, "is utilitarianism, in normative ethics, a tradition stemming from the late 18th- and 19th-century English philosophers and economists Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill according to which an action is right if it tends to promote happiness and wrong if it tends to produce the reverse of happiness—not just the happiness of the performer of the action but also that of everyone affected by it" (Utilitarianism). This viewpoint is concerned with the consequences of an action and if it is benefiting the greater amount of people involved. It's "a personal moral philosophy that focuses on "the greatest good for the greatest number" by assessing the costs and benefits of the consequences of ethical behavior"(Kerin, Hartley, Rudelius, 2015, p.100). This movie had two very strong ethical viewpoints between Virtue Ethics and Utilitarianism. The food that was being processed 50 years ago could not keep up with the amount of meat Americans are eating today. The Food Industry uses antibiotics and GMOs to ensure that food is being grown at a much faster pace in order to keep up with the population and demands. While the Utilitarian viewpoint trusts that they are doing the greatest good for the greater amount of people, Virtue Ethics believe that it's unethical due to being harmful to humans and animals. The movie states that deaths and diabetes have been associated with the way livestock is being grown now. Unfortunately, as long as every American continues to digest their desirable amount of meat, the food industry will continue to execute what they are performing now to provide their product unless the consumer decides to change it. The consumer has the power to change anything in the market that they desire as long as they realize that their opinion counts and every item bought is another vote for which side they agree with.
