First, there are four areas that sex work can fit under on the criminal spectrum. First of all, there is criminalization: with there being the prohibition so that sex work is completely illegal, both buying and selling sexual services; and toleration which is where buying and selling is legal, but there are many legal frameworks in place that prevent acts that could be harmful. Canada has the toleration form of criminalization policy in place right now. There is the option to partially criminalize sex work where it is legal to sell, but illegal to buy (sometimes referred to as Nordic Model). The last two models are decriminalization where sex work and all other related activities are not subject to the law, and legalization where sex work would be regulated for drug tests, STI tests and have strict requirement on places to work. (Benoit et al., 2015) It has actually been found that the criminalization of sex work would not reduce trafficking, and the more effective anti-trafficking models would be decriminalization. All of these interviews revolve around love, migration, social mobility status, and their profession as sex workers. These cases show that the line that stands between the duty to the people you love and exploitation is a very blurry one, and oftentimes it is difficult to know which sides these women stand on. But one thing is certain, they believe they must do so in order to better the lives of themselves and their families, even though it means they must migrate and be apart from their spouses or children for long periods of time, but they may also leave to gain a new experience or leave a difficult one. For example, Mari Carmen “realized that her partner had gone back to his ex-wife” (Casas, 2010. Pg. 50) and this breakdown of a relationship was one of the key reasons she left her home life, for a new experience. Interestingly, another way that this line is blurred between love and exploitation is that oftentimes women decide to migrate out of difficult situations and the only option they have is sex work. They eventually get into relationships with individuals they meet through the sex trafficking field, and it can be very easy for that person to then exploit them again.
