It made me think that if I didn’t care about others I would have turned the other cheek and displayed individual ethical egoism. My selfishness proved not to get the best of me and I wouldn’t have changed anything. Everyone survived and even though it was a very bad situation all anyone can do is keep moving forward, and hope that it never happens again. I believe my split second decision was rational. It’s pretty amazing how our body and brains work together in order to determine right and wrong in a situation. With the husbands trial quickly approaching hopefully our justice system will prove just and prevail! Good discussions on ethics are often driven by situations that challenge our abilities to determine the right thing to do, carry out effective ethical action, or lay out an effective strategy for avoiding ethical obstacles in the future. In this cases I would say you did the crime you deserve the time. Do I believe this was an accident yes but at the end of the day you go back to the question of is this morally and ethically right or wrong to pull a gun on an unarmed person, and law enforcement and my answer (as I hope would be many others) would be no.
