ETHICS IN GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGY As geospatial technology advances, it becomes increasingly more important to implement an equally advancing ethical component. It is relatively easy to acquire geographic information and share it with millions with a click of a button, such as a simple geotag on a safari vacation. Few people, however, recognize that geotags’ magnitude and how it could be aiding in the mass poaching event of African rhinos. South Africa’s National Parks have been fighting poachers that use geotags to locate African rhinoceros for decades and it seems like an interminable fight. Poachers in South Africa were able to track down rhinos when coordinates were attached to photos from the safaris (Time n.d.).
Society’s current fixation on communication of geographic information over social media platforms, such as Instagram, can be extremely dangerous to something that is trying to hide from extinction. The ethical concern stems not only from the poachers using the GPS coordinates for illegal activities but also for those who are willingly providing the coordinates for critically endangered species on social media. Humans have a moral responsibility to defend the environment

Poaching has numerous consequences that concern society. The loss of one or two species can create a cascading event that would disrupt entire ecosystems, which can also negatively impact human health and fitness. The first to be affected by this ecosystem shift would be the local residents that would possibly affect future crop yields, (BUSINESS) pest populations, and even land topography. Though people from other countries may not feel the immediate affects from the loss of rhino populations, they eventually will. By not protecting critically endangered species, humans can face devastating ecological consequences (Sterbenz

Have you ever heard of the West African Black Rhinoceros? As of 2011 this species is extinct and society could have prevented it (Gerkens). The species is thought to have died off, because of poaching, but taking precautions could have prevented their extinction. This is just one example of Earth’s deterioration with irreversible consequences that could have been averted. Societies use Earth and all of its resources and expects no repercussions.…

But the controversy doesn't end there. A big conservation issue in the fight to protect rhinos is dehorning -- removing around 90 percent of a rhino's horn. According to Save the Rhino, https://www.savetherhino.org/rhino_info/issues_for_debate/de-horning while dehorning has a place in rhino conservation, it should be a last resort, and it isn't a magic bullet. Dehorning is actually worthless without "extensive anti-poaching security and monitoring efforts" and a "publicity drive to ensure that poachers are aware that the rhinos have been…

What I learned most from this course after Snapshot Serengeti is how to work with people and solve problems, and I also learned how to create different graphics. This is my first science course at the UMN. I think studying for a biology class can seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. If you follow a few simple steps, studying for biology will be less stressful and more enjoyable. It’s kind of stress at first, However, I feel better about this class later on, I think nothing is easy when you don’t pay enough attention.…

The millions of dollars that comes from duties placed on hunters go to wildlife conservation efforts, and the connection between hunting and conservation is perspicuous, especially in the USA. However, hunting for the big-five (elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions, and Cape buffalo) in the African subcontinent has raised many moral and ethical controversies, with hunted animals such as Cecil the Lion being named in the arguments of people opposing hunting. Most biologists estimate that the population of big-game species have decreased up to 60% in the 35 years between 1970 and 2005. Hunters such as the American client hunting for elephants in Nyae Nyae, however, argue that by paying for expensive legal hunts of these animals, they are supporting the protection of their habitat and their species. Back in Nyae Nyae, Dam was intently following the tracks, and a while later, they finally found three male African elephants grazing over a small hill.…

In the article, “Which Species Will Live?” by Michelle Nijihuis, she explains in her article her thesis and the main point, which is, that as a society, we need to make stronger efforts to save more species and to not just let them die out just because they do not deserve a position that is valuable enough for this society. She compares also what society should be accomplishing to a battlefield medic who, “works unstintingly to save lives, even while knowing that he or she cannot save them all.” This was an attempt to discuss her point on how individuals should attempt to save species if, once again, they are not able to be saved or even helpless. Due to customs, safety, and morals the topic of which firearm should be used for hunting has been discussed between hunters for many decades. Some of the main arguments have to do with being humane, not randomly shooting, and accidents. If the hunter wounds an animal, they can put the animal out of its misery more quickly. Hunters using a semi-automatic won't “spray and pray” - firing blindly without making an effort to aim correctly and hit their target. Manually operated firearms have been in more hunting accidents than semi-automatic firearms.…

Numerous people believe owning an exotic pet, such as a tiger or a lion would be fine, since some people view these exotic animals as normal average pets. However, not many Americans take into consideration the effects these exotic animals can cause to humans and to the animals themselves. In National Geographic, the author of the article,“Exotic Pets”, Lauren Slater, presents a graph to show that 66% of exotic animals are owned privately, 28% of the animals are owned by the zoo, and 6% of the animals are owned by the circus. The percentages shown above represent the total amount of exotic pets being held captive without a license or a permit, which is 96%, from 1990 all the way up to 2013. This statement alone gives the following…

While some laws, such as the 1973 Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 have worked on animal conservation, humans as a whole need to feel more inclined to help the animals in need in any way they could. There are laws and rules all over the world for the protection of species, but some people, such as poachers, simply ignore these laws and continue to pursue the endangered creatures. People should want to help protect these endangered species, more than the people who want to harm them. The protection of endangered species is supported by different ethical theories. One of the ethical theories that supports protecting endangered species is consequentialism.…
