The Karen Healey, Becoming a trustworthy profession, concerns the practicalities of social work as a profession with emphasis on trust. Additionally it's intention is to illustrate how trust is a functioning pillar of social work as a profession and when broken can undermined it's intentions. An example given is the royal commission into abuse in institutions to demonstrate how a breach of trust can destroy reputations and trustworthiness of professions. Healey then goes onto elaborate as to how social workers must view themselves and the skills they can accrue to be both effective and trustworthy. From the essay, I argue that before any social work could be conducted , that the stereotypes surrounding practice makes the job more difficult. Social workers are working from a bias before they begin as almost an admission to prove themselves trustworthy. Social work however does not exist alone other professions require trust, I believe this is more evident when dealing with vulnerable people. The paper appears to be arguing that high standards is a moral obligation or higher ground this may infer that most other people in a particular situation would act against what is correct for the sake of themselves or the institution they work for. I believe Healey arguments whilst correct may have limitations as all jobs no matter the transparency can create a culture of covering up based on hierarchal structure and job security no matter the regulations. I agree that a knowledge based practice is the most effective way of improving the skills of the social workers. I think the practice should have a degree of fluidity depending on circumstances and also be at the discretion of the social worker. Therefore having ethics would transcend the case by case basis and would be a moral compass on which we can base our decisions. The most important point I would take from the essay is social workers must conduct themselves in a higher standard than simply continuing the statusqou.
