Ethical Traits Of John Proctor

When the name John Proctor is brought up, a lot of words come to mind. At the beginning of the play The Crucible I did not like John Proctor at all. He seemed to be the type of person that did things that nobody liked. He had a dark side to him. For example, he had an affair with Abigail Williams. This dark side almost led to the death of his wife. Towards the end of Act Three, John Proctor started to grow on me because he started making better choices towards the different situations he was put in. In the end, what he really wanted was for his name to have a reputation. So when he was gone that everyone could look back on his reputation and call him a good man. John Proctor was willing to turn his life around so he could save people around him, even if it meant he died. Even though this is the way I think of Proctor, he has many different judgements about his own morality. Although he might not be the most ethical person, I believe he has characteristics that do make him an ethical man. To begin, the first characteristic that describes John Proctor is bravery. Although he made some mistakes throughout the play, he made the right decision at the end. By being brave John Proctor stepped up and told the court that the girls were just acting. Having perseverance led John to speaking the truth just to sacrifice his own life for somebody whom he loved. Being honest led to John Proctor seeing the bigger things in life that actually matter. John Proctor turned his life around. You could finally see what he truly cared about in the end of the play.
