How does your resilience affect your ability to think and act ethically?
Resilience is probably one of the most profound overt actions that enhance or hinder
critical thinking. When an individual lacks the ability to reason through the elements of critical
thinking, then their bounce back ability will also lack when dealing with stressful situations.
When cognitive functioning is misfiring, and one simply starts to reason in absolutes versus
finding an array of alternatives, then it can be clear that a lack of resilience is starting to set in.

From your experience, how can moral disengagement affect resilience?
I would have to say that moral disengagement and resilience go hand in hand. When one
starts to degrade then the other will naturally follow suit. I would say that a lack of resiliency
would have a greater affect an individual’s ability to disengage when dealing with potential
ethical and moral dilemmas. I know from personal experience that I have used displacement a
few different times during combat deployments when current policies and procedures were sort
of “strapping” soldier’s hands. Specifically, rules of engagement (ROE) is a commonly debated
issue, especially for those who being exposed to ethical situations. Probably the most distracting
facet of ROE is when dealing with the various partnered forces that are in theatre. In my early
deployments, ROE was very simple; if you felt threatened then you authorize the use of deadly

What did you learn about yourself, others, and the Army from your lessons on ethics, self-
awareness and resilience?
Probably the most important factor that I take away when covering any of the mentioned
topics, is the fact that I’ve been guilty of one facet or another somewhere along in my 18 year
military career. Normally most of our exposure to these topics is presented/educated in a garrison
environment, because that is where most Soldiers were getting in trouble. Therefore, the
confusion comes when being educated in an environment that is different from actual
application. The concept of train as you fight is therefore degraded and Soldiers can get highly
confused, especially when being exposed to crucially time sensitive situations.
An intellectual trait that I learned about myself was the ability to understand and apply
resiliency. This first took face when I went through SERE school during several “enhanced”
interrogations. I thought I was self-aware of the numerous situations that were going to be
presented, but really did not have the cognitive capability to be self-aware during the actual
application for several of them. In my Army career, I haven't really been exposed to a
