Much like those who are part of the army or any armed government forces, police officers put their lives on the line to protect and regulate social justice and crime. They are a bond of trust that unites the citizens with the government thus given the right to use deadly force; the use of deadly force is an officer’s right to take a suspect’s life in the heat of pursuit upon reasonable beliefs that the suspect poses a threat the officer or others (Altrichter, 2015). The use of deadly force however is not one that is given without a sense of cause. The cause and effect situation of the use of deadly force lies within our constitution, the second amendment, which states that all U.S citizens have the right to bear arms (Acosta, 2015). First we must look at the barriers that officers may face when in the line of duty. Judgement and discrimination are two factors that often provoke media attention. As a growing country who have suffered from great discrimination to all those who are considered different, America is unfortunately still healing from the scars left behind by the victims and the perpetrators. Though the media exclusively loves to cover racial discrimination and the use of deadly force, this shows that the country has grown and will no longer tolerate racial discrimination as it had before. This in turns pressures officers to to judge based on action rather than race or any other factors. However instead of the media focusing directly on racial discrimination and deadly force, it is important to focus specifically on all victims of deadly force as well. This furthers creates an unbiased judgement as one’s life shouldn’t be taken without proper assumption of danger. Another way to correct the system is to have another branch of the justice system that specifically investigates all deaths by government officials or those working for the states in order to determine if a justifiable homicide was indeed justifiable.
