Ethical Police Use Of Force

Decent Essays
In my opinion, after watching all 5 videos I was able to come to the conclusion on whether or not force was excessive and if the officers’ behavior was ethical. For the first video it was a routine traffic stop that escalated into the suspect being teased. Overall, I felt like in this specific situation the police officers’ use of force was warranted, because the suspect wouldn't comply with the officer request for her to get out the car. The 2 circumstance that I found questionable was when the suspect was tased by the officer while on the ground and also I found it strange that one of the officer would make such a snarky comment to the suspect saying that he has been personally tased before and it is not that bad. I believe that pain is subjective and I feel like the …show more content…
Yet, I did observe some verbal banter back in forth between the kids and officer. The officer took away one of the kid’s skateboard in order to intimidate the kids to stop calling him “dude”. The main reasons why I believe this situation is unethical is, because of the officer two statements that stood out to me in the video as abusive. When he told the kid he would smack him if he keep being disrespectful and if you go around doing this stuff someone will kill you. Moreover, for the third video I felt like in that specific situation the police officer use of force was unwarranted, because the suspect wasn't causing any form of resistance and the officer pull out his gun prematurely. The two main reason why I believe the police officer behavior was unethical, because he yelled at the lady and shoved her to the ground with excessive use of force. Furthermore, in the fourth video I felt like in this particular situation the police officers’ use of force was warranted, because the suspect was actively resisting

It really shows the reality of this world and that police officers are human as well. We all contain our own kind of flaws where none of us are perfect. William Westley, a man who helped pioneer policing, once said,”Brutality and the third degree have been identified with the municipal police of the united states since their inauguration.” Excessive force used by police is not uncommon. Instances of this can be seen throughout history, most notably in Los Angeles, California during the 60’s which helped lead to the Race Riots, but the examples don’t stop there. This brutality is surfacing more and more with advancements in video and audio recording technology. We have discussed this issue in lecture and is something that i take very passionately, not only since law enforcement is a career path i look forward to getting into, but i have been a victim of this as well.…

Using excessive force when necessary is understandable, but using excessive force when it is not necessary is a problem. Police officers over use their power and believe because they are the law it is okay to be done. Not only does the police verbally and physically abuse an African American, but they mentally abuse the victim too. Yes, it should be justified for a cop to fire a gun because they need a way to protect themselves from danger but then again what they consider risk could be regarded as harmless. Police brutality is the use of any force exceeding that reasonably necessary to accomplish a lawful police purpose. Sadly there are many cases where Police officers have used excessive force on someone who wasn't doing anything, for example, Eric Garner, 43-year-old man was put in an illegal chokehold for 15 seconds for allegedly selling cigarettes. Garner repeated “ I can't breathe” 11 times while several police officers held him. Eric Garners situation is an excellent example of a Police officer using excessive force in an unnecessary situation.…
